“just show up, that’s half the battle, just show up. You can’t get intimidated by people that are more successful. It’s just show up. The other piece that goes along with showing up is… A lot of what I do is basic things, I just do basic very consistently. So, it’s kind of consistent persistence. So, I just do the same thing every day and it’s worked for me for the last going on 13 years now. So, show up, stick your hand out shake hands with people, introduce yourself. Everybody puts their pants on the same way regardless of how successful or how much money they have. You put your pants on one leg it is time… Find a mentor, find and industry expert and pick their brain as much as possible. Don’t worry and invent the wheel… There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. You can put your own spin on things but don’t reinvent the entire wheel.”…[Listen for More]

“if you are going to bed on a Sunday night with a feeling of dread in your stomach for Monday morning then something has to change – there is something wrong, you have got to do something different. If you are going to live for when you get to start, when do I get my next lunchbreak, when is the weekend, oh crap it’s Sunday, when is my next vacation, when do I get to retire, when do I get to stop. I think you really have to assess that and you need to build not only a life but a business to support that otherwise it is just a job. And if you are dreading to go to your business then it is no different than dreading and going to a job in the morning. You need to love what you do and create the life that you don’t need a vacation from – work life integration”…[Listen for More]

Tori Thomas AND Laura Deleot built Circa Design on a set of principles: intentional design, focused processes, collaborative teamwork and creative curiosity. “know your audience, know yourself and be decisive in the decisions that you are making currently… What’s the worst thing that can happen…What is failing? The worst thing that could happen if we take that risk… Sometimes it helps I think to know if it’s a risk worth taking. Because if the worst thing could happen is something that we are not really willing to let happen then maybe it’s not. But most of the time it’s like the worst thing that could happen is you fail, we have to shut something down and then we go back to doing it the way were doing before, which helps me assess if it’s worth it. And I feel like most times I like oh worst thing that can happen is really kind of fine. It’s a good reality check and puts things into perspective”…[Listen for More]

“take a step back and ask what is success for you… It is easy to fall into other definitions… It’s easy to fall into the entrepreneurial hustle, oh I have got to get funding, I have got to make seven figures, I have got to do this that and the other. So I think take a step back, ask yourself why did you start or why do you want to start your own business, what is it going to bring you, what are your core values and priorities. And then once you’ve taken that one step back want you to take one step forward. Mr. Robert E. Chisholm, FAIA, NCARB, graduated in 1973 from the University of Florida with a Bachelors in Architecture and in 1977 from the University of Miami with a Masters in Urban Design. His interest in architecture was founded during his childhood in Havana, Cuba amongst the colonial, baroque, neo-classical and art deco architecture. At the University of Florida, under the guidance of Harry Merritt, architecture became his passion in life. His actual career in architecture and urban planning began as a member at the Metro-Dade County Manager's Office in the Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) during the 1970's. Mr. Chisholm was lead principal planner in charge of planning and implementation of capital improvement projects in several urban neighborhoods such as Edison Little River, Downtown Miami and South Beach. While at the OCED he developed and strengthened relationships with members of the Federal, State, County and City governments in planning, funding and implementation of projects; which would later prove invaluable in the growth of his career and future firm. In 1983, Mr. Chisholm was a finalist for the post of Assistant Secretary of Transportation for the United States Department of Transportation under President Ronald Reagan.

“I believe that any human being if they set their mind to something without selling out their value system or their integrity or their beliefs, they can just about achieve anything they want. But anything and everything that you undertake will require an incredible amount of effort and time and perseverance. You have to earn it, there is no easy road but you have to enjoy the trip and you have to balance everything and you have to think as I mentioned earlier that your wake does not overturn any of the adjacent boats because you have to think of others as you go up the ladder or down the ladder. And you have to be able to look everyone you encounter later on make sure that you look at them and they look you with both a smile on your faces because you have to set a good example all the way – going in and coming down… Enjoy life because you only get one shot. This is not a dress rehearsal”…[Listen for More]

Ryan was also a Denver Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree in 2017 and is a graduate of the University of Denver.

“somebody told me when I was getting going two pieces of advice which I have treasured always and I have repeated so many times. This gentleman said Ryan starting a new business that’s fantastic, I’m proud of you, is going to be a long journey but he said you have got three things. You have work, you have family and you have friends. Choose two, you are only going to have time for two. What is it going to be? Obviously, you choose work and family. That’s how I have had to choose where my time goes. And that was really illuminating for me in terms of how little time will be available and how big of a lift it is to start a business. Second piece of advice that put out there is same person told me in my commute home after a long day at work, let’s say I get 15 minutes in the car on the way home. He said you have got to treasure that 15 minutes, you have got to take that 15 minutes relieve your stress, get home to whatever home is for you and find your inner peace. Because that 15 minutes is your 15 minutes to recharge for your day really begins. And you walk in that door at your house because your wife and your family are all waiting there for dad to be present. And a lot of times of you don’t have that recharge and 15 minutes on that commute home you are not going to do what you need to do when your day really begins which is being that father and that husband ”…[Listen for More]
